An uninsulated ceiling can lose anywhere up to 35% of heat during the winter and gain the same amount during the summer. It can also make a huge difference to your electricity bills and comfort. That’s why it’s imperative to ensure that you have the proper ceiling insulation. And the good news is, if you have the right insulation batts, you can do it yourself without much hassle.
So, if you’d like to install and you’re looking for ways to save money, you might like to consider DIY. We’ve laid out a few things you need to do before getting started.
Measure your roof space and choose your ceiling insulation batts
Writing down the correct measurements and choosing the right roofing materials can end up saving you time and money when installing your own ceiling insulation. If you follow our step-by-step process, you can’t go wrong:
- Measure the spaces between joists to determine which ceiling insulation batts are suitable for your home
- Measure the area and work out the m2 required
- Divide the m2 by the coverage on the ceiling insulation bags to work out how many packs you will need
- We always recommend you grab an extra bag just in case
- If you’re not sure how to calculate how many bags or packs you need, have a chat with the team at A & D Discount Roofing Supplies
Preparation of your materials and workspace
First things first, prepare your roofing materials and your workspace. To do this, you will require the following:
- Grab a ladder – this is needed to get you up into that roof cavity
- Remember a sharp Stanley blade – you will use this to trim your ceiling insulation
- Purchase a mask, goggles, and long sleeve shirt – this is for comfort
- Have a sturdy board handy – you’ll need to place this over the joists as you work
- Remember – do not stand on the ceiling plaster as it’s not made to hold your weight
- Have a bottle of water handy – it can be thirsty work!
- Turn off the electricity at the power box and tag it – this ensures no one turns it on while you are installing your ceiling insulation
How to install your ceiling insulation
Once you have all your roofing materials, you’re ready to go! Simply follow our 7-step process, and you’ll have your new insulation installed in no time.
- Carry your sealed ceiling insulation packs into the roof
- Open them there as they will expand once the bag is opened
- Start laying your insulation from the outside working your way back to where you accessed your roof cavity
- Fit ceiling insulation batts snugly between the joists onto the ceiling plaster
- Make sure your batts are flat and if you can’t reach those hard to get to narrow spaces nearer the eaves, use a non-conductive rod – like a broom handle – to push your batts into place
- Insulation batts can cover electrical wiring, but maintain a 50mm clearance around ceiling downlights.
- Ensure ventilation openings remain unblocked to maximise air circulation
